(PSP ‘The Eagle’)
“The Eagle”
Polish Society of Peterborough was constituted on 13th May 2006.
Twenty five people attended the first Committee Meeting. Today the Society
declares thirty members and welcome new members.
In the logo and the name of the Society one can see the eagle. By the
legend, the mythical founder of Poland – Lech, chose the white eagle for the
symbol of its nation, admiring the beauty of the place he decided to settle.
More historical stories says that the tribe ‘Polanie’ was using that symbol to
make them stronger and more powerful, because it was similar to the badge of
the ancient Roman Army. The fact is that the eagle symbol was used on the coin
of the first Polish crowned king, Bolesław Chrobry, in the beggining of the
eleventh century AD and formally became the Polish national symbol from the end
of the thirteenth century. Of course, the shape of it was changing throughout
ages. Today it is a white eagle, that has its head turned right, on the red
board. It is the tradition that the eagle has a crown, that was restored after
almost fifty years of the communism regime, in 1989.
Polish Community haave been a part of Peterborough community since the
time of the Second World War. As they were quite a large group in those days
they created the Polish Club and Ex-servicemen Society. Since joining the
European Union, the number of Polish people has grown in the City and created
new challenges for the community to have to deal with. With this, the new
social group has developed that hopes to share their way of thinking, their
culture and create apositive image within the City.
The fundamental aim of the Society is to provide comprehensive service
to help the Polish people living in Peterborough and sorrounding area. It hopes
to create a communication process between Polish community and the athorities
in the City as well as other minorities living here. It is believed that
contribution to the dialogue of the communities is required to gain cohesion
and safety, to make Peterborough more friendly for everyone. More importantly,
the Society wants to be strong and consolidated group. The life of the migrants
is not so easy, so the members want to meet each other, share problems or joys
and have a nice time together.
Although it is called ‘Polish Society’, the organization is not only
polish people. It welcomes anyone that embraces the idea of intercultural
understanding beyond the nationalities, that looks for common ways of thinking
about humanity, that is interested in ‘Polishness’ or just want to spend a nice
time with interesting people. The group meets once a month, on the general
meeting, but there are also appointments in smaller groups, according to
particular issues.
